Sauna Sazae
In 2022, a unique sauna was built at the Sana Mane glamping site on Naoshima Island. Its design is inspired by the shell of the Turbo cornutus mollusk, known in Japan as sazae — which is how the sauna got its name, Sazae. This approach is an example of biomimicry, an architectural concept that draws inspiration from natural forms and living organisms. (Though it also strongly resembles a khinkali dumpling — but so far, no references to Georgian cuisine influencing the design have been found)
The spiral shape of the shell was achieved using 5,000 plywood panels, with an entrance that resembles the shell’s natural opening, or mouth. Typically, a space with such a high ceiling wouldn’t be ideal for a sauna, but a specially designed ventilation system ensures proper air circulation and maintains a comfortable temperature.
This concept seamlessly fits into Naoshima’s artistic landscape, as the island is known for its unique art installations and contemporary architecture.
