Sayama Lakeside Cemetery Community Hall
"How Can Architecture Support Those Experiencing Deep Grief?"This question became the foundation for creating the
Forest Chapel, located in the non-denominational Sayama Cemetery, and later inspired the design of the adjacent Community Hall, situated on a slope leading toward the city.
Every element of this space is crafted with care for those going through loss. The eaves, set at a height of 1.46 meters, align with the level of half-closed eyes, weighed down by sorrow. This design allows visitors to gaze at the landscape as if through a veil, offering a moment for reflection or memories of loved ones. The roof, reminiscent of a wide-brimmed hat or traditional Japanese umbrella, seems to float above the hall, creating a sense of protection and seclusion. As sunlight reflects off the surrounding pool, the hall fills with a gentle, calming light.
Architect Hiroshi Nakamura also considered the interaction between individuals and the space. Depending on whether you are standing or seated, two different perspectives of the surrounding world emerge. When standing, one sees the world indirectly, through reflections of the sky and greenery in the pool encircling the building, and their glimmers on the ceiling. When seated, a view of the Sayama Hills, dense forests, and the distant cityscape unfolds.
