Hisao & Hiroko Taki Plaza
The student space at the Tokyo Institute of Technology is thoughtfully integrated into the historical context of the campus.

What makes this project particularly interesting is the architects' decision to place the majority of the building underground, ensuring that the view of the clock tower—the campus’s most iconic and oldest structure—remains unobstructed. This approach preserves the visual harmony with the historic surroundings.

The above-ground portion features wooden seating areas, with a design resembling the spreading delta of a river. This space offers students a place to relax or gather. Other elements, such as the use of glass and a clean white color palette, help the structure blend seamlessly into the environment.

While the building stands out in its own way, it conveys a deep respect for the campus’s history, emphasizing the importance of context.
